The Sunday #6

It's the last day of January!  Ah, where did the month go?  It's been three weeks since I've written a roundup post, too.  I bring you this week's Sunday post from the couch of the home where I am dog sitting.  By the way, check out how she's laser focused on the soy milk in my hand!

DESIGN.  I think I may have finally settled on a blog design.  It's still a toss up between committing to a monochromatic theme or muted colors, because I really love both.  Am I the only person who seems to have ADD with their layout?  I draw a lot of inspiration from the beautiful, clean layouts I see.  It's a bit of a balancing act to make something that I feel reflects my aesthetic while trying to make it look distinct from everything out there.

50 SHADES.  My girlfriends and I are going to see 50 Shades of Black tonight.  It's a parody of 50 Shades of Grey, which was the one of the best unintentional comedies since The Room.  When we saw the original in theaters, we were that obnoxious bunch snorting and snickering through its entirety.  Watch these movies with friends.

THE GIRL GANG.  I've been seeing #TheGirlGang on Twitter a lot so I decided to check it out.  It's this great community run by Jemma at Dorkface.  I think this type of girl-with-girl support and solidarity is really awesome.  Sometimes, I see bigger bloggers pull out the ladder from beneath them and this is just the opposite.  The Girl Gang is also a great way to discover new blogs.  One of the first things I did was go through the list of members and subscribe to new reading.  Check it out here.

CAMERA.  I've decided I'm going to carry my DSLR around in my backpack and take shots on my lunch breaks.  I keep telling myself I'll take "serious" photographs "when I have time," but there never really is a "good" time because all I ever do is a) go to lab, b) go to the gym, c) shower and eat, and d) fall asleep watching Netflix because I'm exhausted.  I take for granted that I can see the mountains from my campus and that I'm surrounded by architecture, eucalyptus, and olive trees.  There's plenty of beauty to capture every day if I just look.

LINKLOVE.  I'm going to start sharing blogs with my Sunday posts.  Dorkface:  Jemma writes honestly and keeps it real.  She also writes helpful posts on blogging.  I wish I hadn't found Felicia's blog right on the cusp of when she went on hiatus.  I want to say she writes about food, feminism, and fiction all coupled with beautiful photography, but none of those descriptions really do her justice.  This post hooked me.  Felicia writes beautifully and intelligently.  Trust me, these two ladies are well worth the time to read.

Now I'm off to try to get some things done before this Sunday is over.  It's raining pretty heavily today which is unheard of for Southern California.  All I want to do is stay home instead.  If this isn't first world whining, I don't know what is. XO

Pick 5: "My Skin, But Better" Bases

Anyone who is acquainted with me is well aware of my addiction interest in makeup and beauty.  Over the years, I've amassed quite a large collection of products and one thing I am always on the search for is the perfect base.  Perfect for me means:  light-to-medium coverage, a finish with a glow, and imperceptible on the skin.  In short: my skin, but better.  Here are my favorites!

bareMinerals Complexion Rescue Tinted Hydrating Gel Cream / $29
Like the name suggests, this is a gel based tinted moisturizer.  This feels very much like applying the last step to my skincare routine.  I get a light coverage, evened out skin, and a bit of warm glow.  Don't expect this to cover up blemishes or dark circles - you'll still need a concealer, but the glow you get as the day wears on is pretty nice.

La Roche-Posay Athelios 50 Mineral Tinted Ultra Light Sunscreen Fluid / $33.50
I wear this on days where I really can't be bothered with makeup.  The tint in this sunscreen is darker than my face so it gives me a healthy glow without the sun damage.  I like using this on camping trips, at the gym, or generally days where I'm slumming it in workout gear as clothing.  The high SPF without a white cast is a great bonus.

L'Oreal True Match Lumi Cushion Foundation / $16.99
This is L'Oreal's first cushion foundation.  The application is super easy and it's great for chucking in your bag if you're running errands all day.  I'm not a huge fan of how unhygienic the pad is so I sanitize it between uses with 91% rubbing alcohol.  The only downside is that this wears off a bit during the day so I need to touch up occasionally.

The Body Shop All-In-One BB Cream / $20
I mix the BB cream in with a facial sunscreen since it doesn't contain SPF which is odd for this type of product.  The cream is white with little spheres in it that dissolve as you rub it onto your skin; it's a color adapting BB cream that matches you as you apply it.

NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer / $42
My favorite tinted moisturizer is a toss up between NARS and bareMinerals.  The NARS tinted moisturizer provides light-medium coverage and is the thickest of all these products.  This is the only high end base I repurchase.  This doesn't break me out, evens out my skin really well, and applies like a dream!  You only need a little bit of product so despite the hefty price tag, a tube of this will last you a long time.

With the exception of the L'Oreal foundation, I apply all of these products with my fingers.  Since I carry my makeup bag around in my backpack, I like to minimize the tools I need.  I also race to get my makeup done in the morning so the mister and I can leave the house on time.  These "my skin, but better" bases offer fairly idiot proof application!

Crystal Cove

It's been a few years since I've been to Crystal Cove beach in California. I don't actually go to the beach very much despite living in California.  Most of them are at least an hour's drive away and the work culture in graduate school is such that getting away for a whole day can be difficult to orchestrate.  My trip to Big Sur was the last time I had a chance to dip my feet into the Pacific Ocean and it had been a few years since I'd last done it by then.  I found these pictures from several years ago on my laptop today and realized it was maybe the last time I pseudo-seriously took my camera out.  Yes, I am aware I'm flagrantly violating the rule-of-thirds here.

I miss the ocean all the time.  In fact, I love and yearn for big bodies of water.  I was at Northwestern University last March, attending a wedding and part of the campus overlooks Lake Michigan.  Forget the fact that it was barely above freezing.  I stared down into that cold water and wanted to take a swim.  Truth be told, I've never seen a body of water I didn't want to jump into.

Hopefully, I'll make it out to the beach this summer.  I want to go camping again as well.  Part of me wants to do things that are worth photographing, that are interesting.  Maybe that's not a completely correct attitude, though.  Maybe I should be searching to find something interesting to photograph even without this scenery, force myself to get creative and find beauty in the more mundane.  A real artist should be able to find beauty in anything, right?  TRUTH.

Cross Out "A Little Runner": Reboot & Rebrand

Hi y'all! Does this space look a little different?  Yes?  Good!  I've been considering a new name for my blog for a while now.  A Little Runner originated from my Instagram handle.  I selected it to represent my short stature and, at the time, my training to run in the 2015 Hollywood Half Marathon.  Unfortunately, A Little Runner isn't the most original of names.  Seriously.  Google it.  There are multiple variants that appear and the .com domain name was taken by someone who legitimately blogs about running.  Uh-oh.

I've felt for sometime now that A Little Runner is a bit misleading of a blog name.  I created this place to share photographs, bits about my life, and my interests.  While running is certainly something I am getting back into, it is not my sole focus, as the name of my blog may have implied.  I needed something that was more reflective of myself, my blogging focus, and that was available.

Welcome to Lumière & Lens.  Lumière is French for light which we can all agree is an important aspect of photography.  Light and lens?  I think these concepts are much more suitable for a blog that will feature photographs and snapshots into my life.  Most importantly, it's a name that I am really in love with and am excited to share with you all!  Between the new name and refreshing the layout, I'm pretty stoked about this reboot and rebrand.  I've read that revamping a space if vital towards motivation.  I have to say that I'm definitely feeling more inspired to create content because of how much more inviting Lumière & Lens seems to me.  Watch this space!

The Sunday #5

Hello, lovely readers and Happy New Year!  It's been a while since my last post so here goes...

RECOVERY.  I keep getting sick. This past month and half has been miserable.  I was on medication, experienced very adverse side effects, and may have had my second viral bug of the month.  It's hard to tell if I got hit with a double whammy of something, but after doctor visits, missing my initial flight back to Los Angeles, and many restless nights, I am doing my best to recover.  It's slow going improvement.

FAMILY.  Postponing my flight back from visiting my family meant I got a few more days with them.  I wish I hadn't been so sick, but there is nothing like being around family, to be loved and very taken care of. I do miss them a lot since I only go to the East Coast once or twice a year.  I was that girl crying on the plane as it took off from my parents' town.

GLASSES.  Turns out contacts irritate my one eye (sort of like an allergy?).  I can't seem to wear them the way I used to so it looks like I'll have to switch to wearing glasses nearly full time short of special events or exercising.  Looking into switching contacts, but also getting a new pair of glasses.  I'm also getting used to wearing them all the time and doing makeup with them.  I still feel super geeky in them, but it's nice to have a boyfriend who prefers me in glasses.

TONIGHT.  Spending some time with my two closest girlfriends tonight.  I haven't seen them in weeks!  We're probably going to watch the Golden Globes and just catch up.  Or maybe just watch Mean Girls because that film is a Timeless Classic!

I'm signing off for the afternoon.  I hope I bring better tidings the next time I post here.  XOXO.
