Everybody

battle of the bands, claves, live music, techstock
guitar, guitarist, musician, bass guitar, gibson sg, electric guitar
bassist, bass guitar, jaguar bass
guitarist, ibanez acoustic guitar, acoustic electric, lead singer

My boyfriend and friends/future roommates all play in a band together.  Here they are this past Saturday, taking part in a Battle of the Bands show!  The percussionist was out of town so they played their set with claves and a drum machine.  They performed a set of Gravity Rides Everything, Space Oddity, and Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots Pt. 1.

My initial exposure of the songs on this set list was when my friends would jam and noodle around on their guitars.  In some ways, their versions of the songs will always be my favorite and "right" ones because they set the precedent for the sound.  The originals are fantastic, but I think the band really brings something of their own to these covers.  Does anyone else have a similar experience?

I wish my DSLR had a video feature to share the set with y'all, but we'll just have to settle for still photographs.  It was a great opportunity to document the band playing live on a stage!

Ourselves

We ourselves must walk the path."

Sunday #13: Move Along

I never intended for nearly two weeks to go by since my last post.  If you bear with me, I'll explain and you'll understand the theme of this Sunday post as well as the long silence.

MOVING HOUSE.  My friend and I have lived in a two bedroom apartment through graduate student housing for the past four years that we've retained through a lottery process.  Unfortunately, we didn't get it this year.  I am moving in with my boyfriend (in a house of five people!) and had a very anxiety ridden two weeks as I waited for all the paperwork/approvals to process.  Now I'm just waiting to sign the updated lease.  In the meantime, I have to pack and move house!  It's a strange feeling to pack up a place that has been home for as long as I've lived in California.  My girlfriends and I will have to find a new place for Girls' Night now.

A PHD.  My 4th year meeting with my committee went over pretty well.  It was nerve wracking week going into it.  I spent a lot of time reviewing literature and my work in preparation.  I have a timeline towards graduation which is exciting, but also frightening because there is now a deadline on getting everything done.  The time I have laid out doesn't seem to be very much considering the list of things I have to accomplish.

TODAY.  I spent a bit of time today just taking it easy.  Okay, I started packing things around my apartment.  Between my meeting, figuring out a living situation, and getting my science going, the past few weeks have been extremely stressful.  My anxiety's been pretty bad as well.  The stress definitely took a detrimental toll on my body.  I am a little tired of going to doctors to have them examine X, Y, or Z for them to ask me, "Are you very stressed out?"  My DSLR hasn't been pulled out in weeks so that really needs to change.  That said, I still have a lot of reading to do before tomorrow so we'll see how much I actually "take it easy."

RUNNING.  I ran a 3 mile route twice this week which is more cardio than I have done in ages.  My boyfriend will no longer slow his pace down for me because I "kicked [his] butt so hard" on the last run.  To my surprise, I was able to keep up with his pace both times so I am in better shape than I had originally thought!  How about that, eh?

Be Back Soon

Pawnee, Pawnee City hall, Pasadena City Hall, Parks and Recreation

I took this photograph on an evening out with some friends and colleagues in Pasadena to see Strike Twelve play at Old Town Pub.  We had finished a delicious dinner and needed to kill some time before the show.  If you watch Parks and Recreation, you may recognize Pasadena City Hall in the establishing shots in the show's Pawnee City Hall.  This was taken on my iPhone 5S (which is on its last legs) and cleaned up.  This has been the extent of photographic excitement in the past few weeks that don't involve posting pictures of friends who may not want to be plastered on the internet.

In other news, I clearly haven't fallen off the face of the Earth and died.  Updates have been a bit sparse because I have graduate school things to do.  I never don't have things I need to be doing and every day ends with me thinking of how I could've been more productive so make of that what you will.  As my friend/colleague says, "Everyone always thinks they could've been more productive and efficient."  In any case, I will be back soon (like the end of this week, when things are less hectic).  Cheers.
