Sunday #55: Focus on the Good

Hello, lovelies!  Hope you're all relaxing on this Sunday night.  Confession: this photo from Huntingdon Gardens is from last Sunday and not these past seven days, but I have my reasons!  I'm sitting on my couch, getting some rest after an eventful afternoon as our house watches Game of Thrones.  No spoilers, but it was NOT a restful episode.

Eena, Nancy and I made plans to get food together this weekend.  We decided to meet at Arcadia Mall and . . . here's here it gets extra eventful!  I'm notorious for getting motion sickness easily.  Even though the trip up to Arcadia was only 15 minutes, I somehow managed to get overheated, carsick, and extremely nauseated.  Yours truly managed to upchuck twice in the multiple hours.  I had to cut the trip short and ask to be taken home by Nancy.  I spent the rest of the afternoon resting and trying to rehydrate.  I think it's mostly intense motion sickness, but it could've been something I ate, too.  *shrugs*

It was really nice to see Eena and Nancy -- I appreciate hanging out with great gals!  I felt incredibly embarrassed and kept apologizing for putting such a damper on our girls day.  The real MVPs here are the two of them for being incredibly patient, caring, and making sure I was as fine as I could be.  I said it many times today and I will say it again, "Thank you and I really appreciate it."  Kindness is never taken for granted by me.  I'm also grateful to my other half who brought home saltines, Gatorade and ginger ale for me.  Let's focus on the good things!

Since we're focusing on the good things, I made some strides at work (science) this weekend (more if/when things are final) about which I am both excited and nervous.  In non-science related work, I've recently booked a regular photography client where I shoot images that end up on an online clothing boutique.  It makes peanuts because I quoted the client before I settled on my minimum rate, but she's a dream to work with and I'm getting commercial photography experience!  I also managed to see my friends Liz, Ana and Roberta so it's been a good week for nurturing female friendships.

Oleanders in my neighborhood.

I've been perusing some newer photography accounts and I have realized I am in a bit of a rut.  I always use natural light around golden hour.  How about if I challenge myself more?  Edit differently.  Shoot in difficult situations.  Be less reliant on soft light?  Here are images of Ana and Roberta that were shot outside of my comfort zone.  This time, they're both shot in poor, fading light and edited with more darkness in mind.  What do you think?  Next, I want to try challenging lighting situations at night.

I'm also forcing myself to take pictures on my iPhone because, if I am good, then I should be able to make great images on any device.  Right?  Right!

Here is a parting questionnaire:

1.  What did you do this week?  Highlights and lowlights?
2.  Do you want to read a post on photo editing?
3.  Are you watching the solar eclipse on Monday?

  1. I didn't even know there was a solar eclipse! Are you catching it? Lowlights of my week: working late every night and being so tired :( highlight is that I moved yesterday and the new place is niiiice but with LOTS of unpacking to do...! I hope you are feeling like yourself again today, motion sickness is not fun. I get them on ferries...

  2. Oh, man, I am so jelly you met up with Nancy. That is so going to be one of my goals (still trying to convince her to come to my neck of the woods XD). Meeting up with blog buddies are always fun! Sucks to hear about your sickness, though. :( it was sweet of Nancy to take you home.

Yay for booking a regular client for your photography business. Even better that she's a dream to work with! It's always nice to have client like that :3 And I'm all for using my iPhone for photos because it's convenient XD; And yes to photo editing tips! That'd be awesome!

  3. Sucks about the motion sickness, hope you are feeling better by now! Very cool that you guys get to hang out!

Highlights: chucking a sickie and making it a long weekend
Lowlight: hmm nothing major honestly. I suppose feeling disappointed in people but then me trying to remember that I shouldn't expect anything etc. But the upside to that was that I don't need to file a Paypal dispute since the flowers that I had ordered for said person actually did arrive despite the website looking so dodgy and them never replying to my emails.

  4. It's not nice when you're not feeling yourself but good friends will always be there for you :)

That's so cool your work will be on an online shop - it's not always easy pricing your work, I sometimes undersell myself but then think what the heck I'm worth more than this and they can take it or leave it! It's good to push your photography style to see what suits you, I find shooting in difference environments and conditions really help with improving my filming.

Highs - spending time with my family and playing with my nephews
lows - not sleeping well and not feeling motivated this week!

  5. Love your stunning pictures, love your blog as well, thank you for sharing!!!

  6. Even though you were nauseated, I am still glad that I got to spend time with you and Eena. I mean, you weren't in the best conditions but at the same time, we were 100% down for whatever you were down for :D. You also made me feel happy for hoarding all of those shopping bags in my car LOLOL. You didn't damper anything at all. You still Gucci. Props to your boyfriend for bringing you some goodies for recovery!

Congrats on making some strides at work! So excited to hear more about your lab achievements... on a high level so you don't break any NDA's XD.

So cool that your photography ended up in an online shop! Go you! I love your photography. You're using nature for the best intentions!!!

My highlight of the week was hanging out with you two. Let's do it again XD. Yasss make a post about photo editing and let me steal some of your actions! Just kidding XD XD.

  7. Apologize no longer, Alyse! I'm glad to hear you're feeling better now though. Props to Nancy for having plastic bags in her car + your boyfriend for bringing you the goodies to help make you feel better.

AND YAAAAAS TO A PHOTO EDITING POST. I will definitely enjoy reading that; and since you've mentioned it, definitely looking forward to seeing that post make its way to your blog :)

    Let's hang out again soon!

  8. I hope you're feeling fine now! Congrats on the photography job! Even if you aren't making much, a job's a job. I think the best way to challenge yourself is to use your phone, yes (and I've been trying that as well!), but also take photos all the time, randomly, no matter the lighting or lack thereof. You'll develop your style concerning other conditions easily, I'm sure. You're such a fantastic photographer.

Regarding last week I suppose, because I'm so late to this post:
    1. I started a new freelance job! I can't even remember the low points of last week. I think that's a good thing though.
    2. Of course! It's always so interesting to see how other photographers work.
    3. I did! There wasn't a full eclipse where I was, but the lighting outside got all weird, and I took some interesting photos. Definitely worth it!

I hope this week has been treating you well Alyse!

  9. Aw I wish I was there to hang out with you girls although, I'm so sorry that you got sick! :( I get car sick in just five minutes from sitting in the back seat so you're not the only one! I hope you've felt better since then! Also, I agree that I have been in a photography rut too. I haven't tried anything new or exciting in a while. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with!!
